Musique in French → 02 ⌈FEATURED ARTIST 02⌋

I’d like to once again dedicate an entire post to a very special artist. Reaching any level of international acknowledgment is hard enough for artists producing music with non-English lyrics, but Amadou & Mariam have tackled even larger hurdles on their musical journey than the average artist. The couple’s origins lie in the devastated African continent. Combining that with their shared blindness, one would likely be doubtful of any hope for musical fame. However, after climbing their way to the worldwide stage with their beautiful music and talent, the African duo can be found these days supporting the U.K. tour of mainstream success Coldplay and releasing singles and albums throughout the globe.

Music In Eurovision → 01

Yesterday, the annual showing of one of the most watched television programs in the world came to a close once again– and it’s a show most Americans haven’t even heard of! Eurovision, as it has been known as for over 50 years, is a televised song competition in which the countries comprising the European Broadcasting Union get a chance to submit one song to represent their country and compete against the songs of other countries. The music tends to be a mix of catchy pop sounds sprinkled with folk flavor. In more recent years, most of the countries have been submitting songs with English lyrics rather than songs in their native tongue in order to broaden the appeal and popularity of their submission. However, as we all know well here at Globelle Sound, a fantastic song is a fantastic song no matter what language the lyrics are spoken in.

Though this year’s winner, Fairytale by Norway’s representative Alexander Rybak, featured English lyrics, Eurovision 2009 actually featured a fair bit of language variety. In this post I’d like to honor some of the great non-English and partially English songs of the past few years– starting with Eurovision 2007’s winning song!

Muzică In Romanian → 01

If you’re fairly fluent enough internet culture to be reading a blog like this, you’ve probably heard of the famous Numa Numa Video. The song in that video, as a lot of people may also know, is actually called Dragostea Din Tei and is song by a formerly successful all-male singing trio called O-Zone. For me personally, this song opened a door to an enormous, fantastic world of non-English music when I once heard it playing on my local radio at 1 AM on a Saturday night six or seven years ago. In honor of that wonderful song, I’d like to share another lesser known song by O-Zone and a song by another band that sings in Romanian with a similar catchy, dance vibe to the songs of O-Zone.

Globelle Sound will be taking a different direction today… to a different part of the world! Southeast Asia’s Malay Peninsula is home to the country of Thailand and the following soothing songs you’re about to hear.

I regret to say that I had a lot of trouble digging up information about these two songs and the artists that created them. I can’t even seem to find a suitable video of the first song to use. However, I really adore these two songs and wanted to take a break from European music, so I’ve uploaded a still video of Yàak Mong Ter Nai Ngâe Ráa to a YouTube account so you can still listen. I hope you enjoy!

You may have heard of Rammstein and Tokio Hotel, but there’s a lot more to modern German music than that. You’re in for a treat! The following songs have a bit more of a harsh sound, though each in their very own opposite way, than the music I usually post. I usually don’t care for music like this very often, but these two just got so firmly stuck in my head. I hope you like as well!

When I used to see Russian words spelled out in Roman letters, the sound combination always appeared so harsh looking. But after listening to a bit of Russian pop music over the past few years, I’ve noticed how the language has a truly beautiful, smooth flow to it that is quite more pleasant than the word spellings originally lead me to believe. Today, I bring two Russian songs, one with an older Pop feel and a modern Pop song fresh from the Top 20 Charts, so that you may experience the beauty of the Russian language. I hope you enjoy them!
